History  Lower Assam was historically known as the Kamrupa empire, which included the present-day districts of Kamrup metro, Kamrup, Nalbari, Barpeta, Goalpara, Darang, and Bongaigaon. At its peak, the Kamrupa kingdom included parts of Bangladesh and West Bengal, such as Rongpur and Siliguri. It was a part of the pala and varman dynasties.
